New to Diving? You Can Still Join a 50dives Stop

Try a Discover Scuba Diving experience and be part of the 50 states in 50 days adventure—no certification required.

If you’ve been following 50dives and thinking, “This looks incredible… but I’m not certified,” I’ve got good news: you can absolutely enjoy a 50dives stop as a brand-new diver.

Many of our stops can include a Discover Scuba Diving experience—an entry-level, instructor-led way to get underwater safely, learn a few core skills, and take a real scuba dive. It’s designed for people exactly like you: curious, excited, and ready to try something new.

50dives is about more than racking up dives. It’s about showing up, meeting the local dive community, and experiencing what makes each place special—whether you’re a seasoned diver or you’re taking your very first breaths underwater.

What “Discover Scuba Diving” means at a 50dives stop

A Discover Scuba Diving experience is a guided introduction to scuba with a PADI instructor. You don’t need a certification card because this isn’t a full course—it’s a supervised experience meant to help you feel comfortable and confident in the water.

You’ll start with the basics, learn how the gear works, and practice a few skills you’ll actually use underwater. The goal is simple: you get to experience scuba firsthand, not just watch it from the shore.

The kinds of skills you’ll practice

You don’t need to study ahead of time, but you should expect to learn and try a few foundational skills before and/or during the dive, like:

  • Mask clearing (yes, you can clear water out of your mask)
  • Regulator recovery (if it slips out, you’ll know exactly what to do)
  • Simple comfort and communication skills so you feel calm and in control

Then comes the best part: you’ll go diving.

Typically, a Discover Scuba Diving experience includes about a 30-minute dive, locally guided and closely supervised by a PADI instructor. You’re not getting tossed in and told to figure it out—you’re supported the whole time.

What it feels like to do your first 50dives stop as a new diver

There’s a special kind of excitement that comes with a first dive—nerves, curiosity, and that “I can’t believe I’m actually doing this” feeling. A 50dives stop is a great place for that moment because you’re not doing it alone.

When you join one of our stops, you’re stepping into a friendly, high-energy environment where people are there for the same reason: to dive, connect, and have a great time.

Even if you never end up pursuing a full certification, you’ll walk away with something real:

  • Your first underwater experience (the one you’ll remember forever)
  • A chance to meet divers and instructors in a low-pressure setting
  • A front-row seat to what the dive community is actually like

And if you do fall in love with it (fair warning: many people do), you’ll be in the perfect spot to ask questions, learn what’s next, and get pointed toward training with a local shop.

What to expect when you show up

Every stop has its own flavor depending on the location and host dive shop, but the experience is built to be approachable.

Here’s what you can generally expect:

A welcoming check-in and introductions. We’re big on community. You’ll know where to go, who to talk to, and what the plan is.

A safety-focused, beginner-friendly flow. Discover Scuba Diving is structured and supervised. Your instructor is there to help you feel ready before you ever descend.

Time in the water that’s about experience—not performance. This isn’t a test. You’re there to try scuba, build comfort, and enjoy being underwater.

If you’re the kind of person who likes to know what a stop feels like overall—how the day runs, what the vibe is, and what you’ll be doing on-site—our What To Expect During A Stop/Dive Event page is a great companion read.

How to join a stop as a non-certified diver

The easiest way to get involved is to find a stop you can attend and connect with the local dive shop hosting. We work with shops and instructors who can help you understand what’s available at that location.

A few tips that make it smoother:

  • Reach out early. Discover Scuba Diving spots are supervised and may have limited availability.
  • Tell us you’re new. Seriously—say it upfront. We’ll point you in the right direction.
  • Come ready to participate. You don’t need experience. You just need curiosity and a willingness to learn.

If you’re looking at a specific stop and wondering whether a Discover Scuba Diving experience is possible there, head to Events and stops and then use our Contact 50dives page to ask. I’d rather you ask than sit it out.

Make it a milestone: your first dive with 50dives

A 50dives stop isn’t just a place to “try scuba.” It’s a chance to do something bold in a setting that’s built around encouragement, connection, and adventure.

If you’ve been waiting for a sign to give diving a shot, this is it.

Check out the upcoming stops, find one that fits your travel plans, and let’s get you underwater.
