Common Pre-Trip Questions

Do I need to buy my own backpacking gear?

No. For our beginner-focused trips, especially the backpacking confidence course, we provide most of the core gear you need, including a backpack, tent, and stove. You’ll bring personal clothing layers and a few basics, and we’ll send a simple packing list after you inquire.

How big are the groups?

We keep our trips small and beginner-friendly, with a typical maximum of 6 guests per group. Smaller groups help everyone feel supported, set a relaxed pace, and avoid an intimidating or macho vibe.

Where do we meet for our hike or backpacking trip?

Most trips meet directly at the trailhead in the Central Oregon Cascades. Once your booking is confirmed, we’ll send detailed directions, where to park, and what time to arrive so you feel prepared.

Is food included, or do we bring our own?

For half-day hikes, you’ll typically bring your own snacks and water. For weekend backpacking trips, you can either bring your own food using our recommended meal planning list, or upgrade to our starter food package, which provides breakfast, lunch, dinner, and trail snacks for 2–3 day trips.

What fitness level do I need to join?

Our trips are designed with beginners and “not super outdoorsy” guests in mind. We set a relaxed pace, take plenty of breaks, and keep group sizes small so you don’t feel like the slowest person. When you contact us, share your experience and comfort level and we’ll recommend the best trip fit.

How do you handle safety on trips?

All of our guides are wilderness first responder certified and have 8–10 years of guiding experience in the Bend and Central Oregon Cascades area. We check weather and trail conditions before each trip, carry appropriate safety gear, and focus on patient, supportive guiding rather than a hardcore or macho approach.
