Our Mission: Make Backpacking Feel Possible for Everyone

Bright Tail Adventures is a small outdoor guiding company based in Bend, Oregon. We lead half-day scenic hikes, weekend backpacking trips, and a flagship backpacking confidence course in the Central Oregon Cascades.

From the start, our focus has been on people who don’t see themselves as “hardcore” outdoorsy. Many of our guests are professionals from cities like Portland, Seattle, and San Francisco who feel out of shape, nervous about safety, or unsure what gear to buy—but still really want to experience the mountains.

Instead of a macho, competitive vibe, we create a relaxed, supportive space where you can ask questions, learn the basics, and move at a pace that feels good. Our trips are designed to help you enjoy the scenery, build real skills, and walk away feeling more confident planning your own adventures.

How We Guide on the Trail

On every Bright Tail trip, your guide is there to teach, encourage, and keep you safe—not to push you past your limits. We keep our groups small, usually capped at six people, so you never feel lost in a crowd or like you’re holding anyone back.

We walk you through the fundamentals of backpacking and hiking: how to read a map, choose and pack gear, plan a route, and follow Leave No Trace principles. For many guests, our trips double as a friendly way to meet like-minded people who also want to get outside more but don’t have a ready-made hiking crew.

Whether you join us for a relaxed half-day hike near Bend or a weekend in the Cascades, our goal is the same: you feel safe, supported, and proud of what you accomplished.

What We Value on Every Trip

Beginner-Friendly, Never Intimidating

We design our experiences for people who are new to hiking or backpacking, or who haven’t been on the trail in a long time. You’ll never be shamed for your pace, your gear, or your experience level.

Patient, Supportive Guides

Our guides are trained to be calm, encouraging teachers—not macho drill sergeants. We take time to answer questions, explain the “why” behind decisions, and check in on how you’re feeling.

Small Groups, Big Connection

We keep group sizes small so you can relax, get to know your guide and fellow hikers, and enjoy a more personal experience. Many guests appreciate that it feels more like an outing with friends than a big tour.

Real Skills and Lasting Confidence

From map basics to gear choices and trip planning, we focus on teaching you the essentials so you can feel capable planning your own adventures after your trip with us.

Safety First, Always

We carefully check weather, terrain, and conditions before every outing. On the trail, we pace the group thoughtfully and make conservative decisions so you can focus on enjoying the experience.
