Your First Backpacking Trip, Without the Intimidation

The Backpacking Confidence Course from Bright Tail Adventures is a one-night guided trip in the Central Oregon Cascades, plus a relaxed evening workshop before you go. It’s designed for adults who don’t feel outdoorsy, worry about safety or gear, or simply don’t have friends to go with.

We keep groups small and the pace relaxed, focus on teaching the basics, and provide most of the core gear you need. You’ll come away with real skills, new trail friends, and the confidence to plan your own backpacking adventures.

Small, Supportive Groups

We cap groups at around six people to keep things friendly and non-intimidating. That means more individual attention from your guide and less pressure to keep up with a huge crowd.

How the Backpacking Confidence Course Works

1

1. Choose Your Date and Book

Pick a confidence course date that fits your schedule and reserve your spot. We’ll send a confirmation email with what to expect, a basic packing overview, and where to meet.

2

2. Join the Pre-Trip Workshop

Before your overnight, you’ll attend an evening workshop in Bend (or nearby). We’ll introduce the route, review safety, walk through the gear we provide, and help you finalize what to bring so you feel ready instead of rushed.

3

3. Meet Your Guide at the Trailhead

On trip day, you’ll meet your guide and group at the designated trailhead in the Central Oregon Cascades. Many guests carpool with friends or other participants. We’ll do a quick gear check, review the plan, and start hiking at a relaxed pace.

4

4. Hike In and Set Up Camp Together

We hike to camp with plenty of breaks for photos and questions. Once we arrive, your guide will walk you through setting up your tent, using your stove, and basic camp routines so you can repeat them confidently on future trips.

5

5. Learn Skills and Enjoy a Night Under the Stars

Over dinner and into the evening, we cover map basics, Leave No Trace, and trip planning tips. You’ll get hands-on practice and time to relax, connect with the group, and soak in the scenery.

6

6. Hike Out and Plan Your Next Adventure

The next day we hike back out, debrief what you learned, and answer any lingering questions. Many guests leave already sketching out their next backpacking trip — this time with the confidence to plan it themselves.

Backpacking Confidence Course FAQs

Do I need to buy my own backpacking gear?

No. For the confidence course we provide most of the core gear you need, including a backpack, tent, and stove. You’ll bring personal items like clothing, toiletries, and any snacks or comfort items you love. The pre-trip workshop covers exactly what to bring and what we supply.

How big are the groups?

We keep groups small and friendly, typically up to about six guests. Smaller groups help nervous beginners feel more comfortable, give you more one-on-one time with your guide, and keep the vibe relaxed and non-intimidating.

What kind of fitness level do I need?

If you can comfortably walk a few miles on city sidewalks or local trails, you’re likely a good fit. We move at a beginner-friendly pace with plenty of breaks, and your guide will check in often. If you’re unsure, reach out and we can help you decide if this course is right for you.

Where do we meet for the trip?

You’ll meet your guide and group at the designated trailhead in the Central Oregon Cascades, such as areas near the Three Sisters Wilderness, Mount Jefferson Wilderness, or Newberry National Volcanic Monument. Many guests carpool from Bend or a friend’s house and arrive in one vehicle.

Is food included, and what about water?

For most confidence courses, you’ll bring your own food using our recommended meal planning list with lightweight, easy options. For longer, multi-day style trips, you can upgrade to a food package that covers breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. We’ll talk about water sources and recommend bringing a water filter if we’ll be refilling from rivers or lakes on trail.

How do you handle safety and emergencies?

All of our guides are wilderness first responder certified and have 8–10 years of guiding experience in the Bend area. Before each trip we check weather and trail conditions, carry appropriate safety gear, and have clear plans for contacting medical support or arranging evacuation if needed.

Can I come alone if I don’t have friends who want to go?

Absolutely. Many of our guests sign up solo because they don’t have friends who backpack. The small-group setting makes it easy to connect with others, and the course often feels like a low-pressure way to make new trail friends.

What if I’m the slowest person in the group?

You won’t be judged for your pace. Our trips are designed for beginners, and our guides are trained to keep things patient and supportive. We take regular breaks, adjust as needed, and make sure everyone feels comfortable along the way.
